explosives expert, the quartet makes their way from Athens to
Prague to Mexico to St. Petersburg, Penelope quickly becomes
addicted to the illicit thrills. But as Stephen's elaborate
web of deceit pulls tighter, Bloom begins to wonder if his brother
has devised the most dangerous con of his life.
MOVIE REVIEW:
The Brothers Bloom is one of the coolest con movie in recent years. It spun a lovely tale about scam that
it almost felt like the movie was trying to lure the viewers
into falling for the elaborated turn of events. It has a charming
introduction to the brothers’ foray into the scamming
business and a tongue in cheek presentation on how intricately
their scams were planned out.
After it’s opening hook, the movie opens up with introduction
of various quirky characters that inhibit this wonderful movie.
First up, there’s the brother Bloom, who is jaded with
all the con jobs and wants to get out of it. But he realized
(directly or indirectly) that the best part of his life happened
when he was pretending to be the characters that his brother
Stephen had written for him. Stephen with the writer flair
is the brain behind the con duo and it was a delight to see
how he conjures impressive tight nit scam for his brother
to play out. His constant manipulation of his brother blurs
the line of pure brotherhood concern or working things to
his advantage.
Then there’s Bang Bang, a Japanese lady who specialize
in rigging explosive and stood out as a character who speak
less than 3 English words. There a cool lethalness about this
silent character that makes her the most enjoyable character
to watch out for and there are possibility so many spin offs
that could be written with her character in mind.
Last but not least, there Penelope, a poor rich lady who is
a bit of shut in and spend her lonely time picking up hobbies.
Her quirky persona coupled with some unexpected street smartness
made her character shine and endearing.
Together, these four winsome characters are thrown into a
scam that promises an adventure of a lifetime for one and
a last scam job for the other. It’s filled with witty
banters between characters and figurative clues hidden in
plain sights for both the viewers and characters to discover.
It was one heck of an adventure to go through and one that’s
worth revisiting soon.
If there’s any let downs in this movie, it would have
to be the somewhat abrupt ending. It does not feel in tune
with the comedic feel that the movie been having. The sudden
change made it hard to appreciate the symbolic meaning that
was intended and it can take quite awhile before one can appreciate
the rationale behind the sudden change of the movie’s
tune.
Nonetheless, the Brothers Bloom is still one great movie title
to check out. It symbolized the essence of movie watching
in which we lived vicariously through the lives of other medium.
The adventures we seek to live out but didn’t have to
go through the hassle and danger of actually doing it. Highly
recommended.
